Background
In 1998, the Canada Career Week partners looked for a new approach to encouraging public participation. They decided that an event, under the guise of a "Fall Fair", might attract more visitors and provide an opportunity for each member group to spread our information about Careers, Training, Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship.

In September 1999, the first Big Land Fair was born. Home based businesses (mainly crafts people) were invited to set up sales booths that were intermingled with the CCW committee information booths. The CCW partners organized a variety of contests to attract an eclectic mix of the general public: quilting, vegetable growing, flowers, baking, jams. HRE organized and supervised a children's craft area so that parents could wander around the venue and speak with the various CCW representatives. This first event was a great success with about 1500 people attending.

The Big Land Fair has grown and evolved over the past 10 years. Attendance at each event now exceeds 3000 residents annually. That is pretty significant when you realize that there are under 10,000 people in the whole Central Labrador zone.
